From an estate rescued by the great Ernst Loosen, one of Germany's leading modern winemakers, Villa Wolf is a top-value introduction to Germany's Pinot Noir. Dark cherry notes and gentle spice from part ageing in seasoned oak. A silky, pretty red.

The Wine
Germany’s Pfalz region is well known for Riesling, but also Pinot Noir. Indeed, 40% of its vineyards are dedicated to the red grape. And for good reason. With the Haardt mountains protecting it from harsh Atlantic winds, it's one of the warmest areas in Germany for grape growing. Ernst Loosen is a shining star of modern German winemaking, and one of the first to show that Germany could excel at crisp dry whites. He's also a dab hand at reds, even making a German Cabernet! The 18th-century Villa Wolf estate is one of his rescue projects and, being much in demand, he leaves winemakers Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer in charge of the cellar. Their Pinot Noir is a gentle, berry-scented, cask-aged red, great with white meats and on its own.
