The Wine
Founded in the 1600s, Stellenrust is one of the most important family wineries in South Africa. The Van der Westhuizen family took ownership in 1928, with today's Tertius Boshoff and Kobie Van der Westhuizen in charge since 1999. They're a formidable force, highly rated by Wine Magazine SA: "The rise of the Stellenrust brand is frankly remarkable." Together they work spectacular vineyards in the renowned Stellenbosch Golden Triangle, and produce remarkable, limit-pushing wines. There's a real sense of family here too which extends to the vineyard and winery workers. A dentist by training, Tertius is a self taught, 5-star winemaker. All-Carignan from old, dry-grown vines for intensity, aged in oak barrels for 16 months, it has velvety power.
