RedHeads Wilson Gunn Pax 2018
Barossa Valley

This rich, ripe and velvety blend of the Rhône’s grapes comes not from France but from the premium sites in Australia’s Barossa Valley. Its gorgeous, spicy intensity is thanks to old bush vine fruit, while 20 months of oak adds complexity.

The Wine
Henry Laithwaite first made this wine in 2003 in the McLaren Vale. Today he crafts it at the new RedHeads cellar in the Barossa, but in essence it’s the same luscious Rhône style red, with extra Aussie ripeness. This year he sourced Grenache and Mataro from Adrian ‘Hoffy’ Hoffman – a sixth generation grape farmer in the Barossa’s cooler Ebenezer. There his very old vines produce low yields, packed with flavour. That’s true of the Shiraz too, sourced from Matt and Deb Poole and Andy Kalleske. These are all champion growers, with vines in top sites – in this case Koonunga and Ebenezer again. Traditional fermentation, punch down and ageing in new and old French and US oak all contribute to this rich, powerful red. Enjoy now or tuck away.
