The Wine
Sauvignon Blanc lovers have all heard of New Zealand’s prized Marlborough region. But Marlborough itself is divided into subregions, which produce wines of distinctly different character. Just like any other wine region in fact. There’s Awatere and Wairau for starters, and towards the eastern end lies Rapaura. Here the bony braided river soils meet younger, more alluvial silt. In wine terms, this lends a punchy aromatic lift of grapefruit and lime that carries through in the flavour too. Gentle on the ABV, this is an elegant, crisp white – highly refreshing on its own, and a top choice with seafood dishes such as pan-fried lemon sole or lightly spiced prawn stir-fry. Or a tangy sweet-sour dish of roasted aubergine with tofu and green beans.

Fine, elegant and fresh, a touch riper, but this could almost be Sancerre
