The Wine
Toro has been growing grapes for centuries but only now is it gaining traction as a region to reckon with for top-end wines. It lies northwest of Madrid in Castilla y León, where winters are very cold and summers hot. Its wines used to regularly reach 16° ABV, but winemakers have learnt how to tame the heat to produce delicious, balanced, fruit-filled wines. Bodegas Sobreño is a family-owned cellar founded in the 1990s, that quickly gained awards for its wines. Oscar Martín heads up the winemaking, having gained experience all over Spain. This juicy red is all Tinto del Toro, a thick-skinned clone of Tempranillo. With ample juicy black and cherry fruit, this is a great red with hearty dishes – from shepherd’s pie to sausage and mash.
