The Wine
New Zealand’s Marlborough region used to be known for raising sheep and alfafa. Then, in the 1970s, a few pioneers started planting a few vines. Their wines remained under wraps until the early 1980s, when a family estate showed their Sauvignon Blanc in London and won a Trophy. It was such big news, questions were raised in New Zealand’s parliament. Today it is the country’s star region for this grape. Kingfisher is a new-release from the family-owned estate, Marlborough Valley Wines, and is made by the talented Megan Simmonds. The wine is name after beautiful Kingfisher Bay on the Marlborough Sounds, just north of the region. This white is a delight on its own, or with seafood, summer salads, chicken, spicy noodles or creamy pasta.
