The Wine
The Hambledon estate can boast of being the first to produce English wines commercially. That was in the 1950s after the property’s owner Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones decided to plant vines in a spare field. A Francophile and a wine lover, he did a good job and Hambledon’s wines won Golds and were served on important state occasions. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and a new start with a new owner, Ian Kellett. Ian planted Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, invested in a new winery and brought in one of Champagne’s best chefs de cave as winemaker, Hervé Jestin. Once again their wines gain many awards. This fine fizz boasts subtle biscuity notes from a spell of gentle lees ageing. A superb celebratory drink.
