The Wine
Despite being a designated appellation since 1940, Pouilly-Loché is the Mâconnais’s least known subregion. It has just 32 hectares under vine, 30% of which belongs to Olivier Giroux at his 7th-generation family estate. Clos des Rocs is a 3-hectare, organically certified, monopole (single vineyard) with treasured 85-year-old vines, east-facing and planted on limestone soils. The result is a white Burgundy with intense ripe fruit, notes of hawthorn blossom and pear, shot through by gleaming-bright minerality. Very fine now, or cellar. Best to decant an hour or so beforehand, so the wine opens out. Ideal with seafood or creamy white meat dishes.
Despite being a designated appellation since 1940, Pouilly-Loché is the Mâconnai
This really shows that you don’t need a 1er designation to rock the chardonnay world!
