The Wine
Originally a Reims draper, Nicolas Ruinart started his first ledger devoted to ‘wine with bubbles’ in 1729 – testament to the estate’s claim to be the very first Champagne house. The business was passed down through the generations until the mid 20th century, with such notable customers as Empress Josephine and President Andrew Jackson. Ruinart survived two world wars, received investment from Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1950, and, since 1963, has been in the safe hands of Moët et Chandon. They aim to be more sustainable too, hence their beautifully embossed 'second-skin' packaging which replaces the gift box. Pure Chardonnay, all from Grand Cru sites, with 20-25% reserve wine, aged 8 years on lees, this is a fine vintage Champagne.
