The Wine
Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN boasts one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Rioja Alta, Viña Lanciano. Its 72 hectares lie snug in a large bend of the river Ebro, surrounded by mountains and the rugged landscape, on the cusp of the Rioja Alta and Alavesa borders. Within that single area, there are 22 parcels of vines, each with their own microclimate. This fabulous, mature Rioja Reserva comprises largely Tempranillo, with a little Graciano and Mazuelo for freshness, aroma and spice - all grapes from mature vines (30-40 years old). Winemaker at the cellar for the last 18 years is María Barúa, who aged the gloriously rich and expressive wine in a mix of French and American oak barrels for 18 months and another 20 months in bottle.
