The Wine
With a potpourri of aromas ranging from roses to lychees and spice, Angove Gewurztraminer is a heady wine, full of charm, character and lemony zip. It’s from a cellar founded in the 1900s by Dr William Angove of Cornwall. He began making wine and brandy as a hobby in the 1880s, but by the early 1900s had built a fully equipped cellar and planted extensive vineyards. Today, fourth-generation John Angove is in charge, employing two English winemakers, Tony Ingle and Warwick Billings. John planted many unusual grape varieties as experiments in the 1970s and 1980s, including Gewurz, and now, fully mature, they have come into their own. This fresh, elegant, spicy, off-dry wine is lovely solo and terrific, too, with fragrant Thai curries.
