Gimblett Gravels is New Zealand’s premier region for ‘Cru Classé’, Bordeaux style reds, with conditions similar to pricy Pauillac. Leading the field is this estate. Barrel aged, with 20% new oak, this is a rich, silky red with claret like elegance.

The Wine
Founder of Hawke's Bay Estate Chris Pask was flying his plane over the southern part of North Island one day in the early 1980s when, looking down, he identified the light, stony soils of the Ngaruroro riverbed as the perfect site for growing premium grapes. Chris was right and today the Gimblett Gravels is regarded as one of the best places in the New World for high quality reds, along with Napa and Margaret River. Chris planted his first vineyard in 1981 and his inaugural release, a prize winner, was in 1985. His wines have been winning Trophies and Golds ever since. The team can now boast 60 hectares of vineyards within Gimblett Gravels. Aged in part new oak for 14 months, this fine red is superb with roast meats. Decant early.

Peppery with a fruity depth. This is definitely punching above its weight
