The Wine
Marcel Guigal not only makes an outstanding Saint-Joseph Blanc, he also makes this special Lieu Dit bottling. It includes the old-vine fruit from the former Grippat estate that Guigal now owns. Not only that, all the wine is barrel fermented, half of it in new oak and half in one-fill casks. Hence this white’s luscious wrap of toasted vanilla and spice over mouthfilling orchard fruit. It’s an amazing wine, with 94 points from Wine Advocate. It’s what you’d expect from Guigal, possibly the single most respected producer of the past century in the Rhône Valley. Old-vine Marsanne from steep, granite-rich soils, complemented by Roussanne, it is rich and luscious, with underlying citrus zip. A brilliant partner for sauced white meat or fish.
